  • "Capitol Gains is a very funny novel. Rick Spees has taken his decades of lobbying experience to create a lovable but corrupt lobbyist in Richard Brewster - ambitious, willing to bend a few rules, never telling a direct lie but never quite conveying the whole truth, fast and loose with money. It all goes quite well until Brewster is on top of the world. Then reality sets in. I couldn’t put it down until I saw how Brewster survived his roller coaster ride."

BUDDY DYER | Mayor of Orlando, Florida

  • "Rick Spees’ novel will have you laughing out loud--while you marvel at this riveting inside story of the incredible ways in which Washington really works. It would be hard to find a more sympathetic scam artist than Richard Brewster, or a better guide to the murky world of lobbyist and legislators that inhabit our capital city. I don’t think I’ve ever learned so much about the world of politics while having so much fun!"

LEONARDO A. VILLALON | Professor of Political Science at The University of Florida

  • "With his spellbinding novel Capitol Gains, Rick Spees invites us into a world of intrigue and touching human drama: Washington D.C. The protagonist, a delightful family man and rising star lobbyist becomes obsessed with desire to enrich himself in a forbidden way, and his story is captivating. A gifted craftsman, Spees is a skilled storyteller whose novel takes direct aim at the foibles of human conduct. In Capitol Gains he effectively combines the darkly humorous, tender and sensual to create a memorable satire. Suspense builds throughout the novel, but there is never a clue to the denouement – until you get there, and the arrival will not disappoint."

RAY CARSON RUSSELL | Author of Philurius College Blues

  • "Readers who want to know how Washington really works will turn to Capital Gains, the new novel from the amazing imagination of Rick Spees. Here a highly experienced, but bored, DC lobbyist, invents Citizens Against Tax Injustice (CATI) which becomes the basis for a real-sounding story about the highest levers of government, even though the whole thing may be just a sexy charade. As a Washington veteran myself, an inveterate reader, I became an increasingly hooked believer and you will too."

BARRY JAGODA | Author of Journeys with Jimmy Carter and Other Adventures in the Media

  • "If you have ever wondered how Washington, DC really works and suspect that the federal government is broken, you do not want to miss this read. In Capitol Gains, Rick Spees has created a fascinating story about a lobbyist and his imaginative plan to climb to the top of his profession. This hilariously disturbing plot kept me reading, laughing until the end and hungry for more. Buy the book. You’ll enjoy it immensely…and unlike CATI, that’s no scam."
